Selank

Selank (TP-7) is a synthetic heptapeptide analogue of the endogenous immunomodulatory peptide tuftsin (Thr-Lys-Pro-Arg), developed at the Institute of Molecular Genetics of the Russian Academy of Sciences. The added Pro-Gly-Pro C-terminal sequence enhances metabolic stability and blood-brain barrier penetration. Selank has been extensively studied for its dual anxiolytic and nootropic properties. Research demonstrates it modulates GABA-ergic neurotransmission by influencing GABA transaminase activity, enhances serotonergic signaling through 5-HT receptor modulation, increases BDNF (brain-derived neurotrophic factor) expression in the hippocampus, and modulates the expression of genes involved in enkephalin synthesis. Its anxiolytic effects have been demonstrated in multiple validated behavioral models (elevated plus maze, open field test, Vogel conflict test) without the sedation, dependence, or cognitive impairment associated with benzodiazepines. Additionally, Selank exhibits significant immunomodulatory activity, influencing IL-6, T-helper cell balance (Th1/Th2), and monocyte activity. Research has also explored its antiviral properties, particularly against influenza virus strains.
