CoQ10

Coenzyme Q10 (Ubiquinone-10, CoQ10) is a lipid-soluble 1,4-benzoquinone containing a polyisoprenoid side chain of 10 units, naturally synthesized in all human cells through the mevalonate pathway. It serves a dual function as an essential electron carrier in the mitochondrial electron transport chain (shuttling electrons from Complex I and II to Complex III) and as one of the most potent lipid-soluble antioxidants in biological membranes. CoQ10 levels decline with age, statin therapy, and various disease states. Research applications include studies on mitochondrial bioenergetics and ATP production efficiency, oxidative stress protection in cardiac, neuronal, and hepatic tissue models, statin-induced mitochondrial dysfunction, reproductive biology (sperm motility and oocyte quality), exercise physiology and muscle recovery, and the interplay between CoQ10, NAD+, and sirtuin pathways.
